Activities

Yerba Loca extends over 11,300 ha with an altitude of anywhere between 2,400 to 5,250 meters above sea level. There are many things that you can do and here we will make some recommendations. However, you must practice them responsibly. Assess your physical and mental capacities, carefully study the route and the implements you will need and always check to see what the weather is going to be like for the upcoming days.

Summer Activities

CAMPING

There are 6 areas authorized for camping throughout the Yerba Loca Valley: Villa Paulina, Hornitos, La Lata, Las Cascadas, Casa de Piedra Carvajal and the Base del Glaciar La Paloma.

Villa Paulina: 4.2 km from the administration, vehicle road, elevation of 220 mts, 49 camping sites.

Hornitos: 8.4 km from Villa Paulina, strenuous trekking, elevation of 850 mts.

La Lata: 8.4 km from Villa Paulina, strenuous trekking, elevation of 850 mts.

Las Cascadas: 10.9 km from Villa Paulina, strenuous trekking, elevation of 1070 mts.

Piedra Carvajal: 12 km from Villa Paulina, strenuous trekking, elevation of 1280 mts.

Base Glaciar la Paloma: 14 km from Villa Paulina, strenuous trekking, elevation of 1530 mts.

Remember to camp in areas without vegetation and not to disrupt nature.. Do not camp over wetlands, meadows, caves of coruros and do not damage the vegetation.

TREKKING

There are 30 km distributed over 4 trails to enjoy good walks in Yerba Loca: Cerro Manchón, Mirador del Aguila, Refugio Aleman, Meseta del Condor and the classic Mirador del Glaciar La Paloma.

Cerro Manchón: trail of moderate to advanced difficulty, 7.4 km long – 7 hours. Summit at 3720 m.a.s.l

Mirador del Águila: 1.3 km circuit from Villa Paulina, family trekking, 80 mts of slope.

Refugio Aleman: 3.8 km from Villa Paulina, strenuous trekking, 780 mts of slope.
*Recommendations: It requires a full day to complete, the trail is clear and it is marked. There is little water along the route.

Meseta los Cóndores: 1.9 km from Villa Paulina, family trekking, 190 mts of slope.
*Recommendations: on the way to Refugio Alemán, around 45 min at regular pace from Villa Paulina, it is the best spot near to Villa Paulina to see Andean Condors.

 Mirador Glaciar La Paloma: 14 km from Villa Paulina, strenuous trekking, 1530 mts of slope.
*Recommendations: It requires 2 days to complete, the Villa Paulina – Las Latas / Las Latas-Glaciar-Villa Paulina route is recommended. The signs and the trail are clearly marked. Moderate physical difficulty, it presents no technical difficulties. It is good and safe to hike in wintertime when there is snow, but in the low area of the park the snow melts very fast after the storms.

Cerro del Medio: trail of moderate difficulty, 3.3 km long – 1 ½ hr. Summit at 2325 m.a.s.l.

We ask you to be particularly careful to study them and to ensure that you are physically and technically trained if you want to try to get to their summits. We provide you the reference information below for each mount.

Cerro Manchon: 1-2 days; 7.4 km from Villa Paulina, beginner to moderate difficulty; recommended season from October to May, 1.740 mts of slope, altitude of 3714 m.a.s.l.
*Recommendations: After approaching about 20 min to the north of Villa Paulina, you will begin a climb of 4 to 6 hours, the descent is between 2 to 3 hours. In winter if there is enough snow, it is a good place for snow hiking or slip boarding.

Cerro Los Piches: 2 days; moderate/beginner difficulty; recommended season from October to May, 2200 mts of slope, altitude of 4240 m.a.s.l.
*Recommendations: similar to Cerro Manchón, as it is its neighbor, but it has an additional degree of difficulty as the distance is greater.

Cerro Falso Altar:4549 m.a.s.l, only for experts.

Cerro Altar: 5180 m.a.s.l, only for experts.

Cerro La Paloma: 2-3 days; 4910 m.a.s.l, recommended season from November to March, challenging level.

MOUNTAIN BIKE

For those who enjoy going down mountainous trails, dare to try out the technical track of Refugio Alemán and Parvazo. Not suitable for beginners. For those who are beginning, we recommend the path between the administration and Villa Paulina as a family ride.

Refugio Aleman:Descent trail, 7.1 kms, 900 mts of slope, advanced level.

Parvazo: Descent trail, 5.5 kms, 920 mts of slope, expert level.

HORSEBACK RIDE TO REFUGIO ALEMÁN

You will explore the landscapes of Yerba Loca with a horseback ride through an old German shelter, enjoying the incredible views of the La Paloma Glacier and the Andean Mountains.

You will have the chance to chat with local mule drivers and to earn about their culture.

LUGGAGE PORTING TO THE GLACIER

Winter Activities

ICE CLIMBING

There are several waterfalls in the Valley that get frozen during winter and the biggest enthusiasts take advantage of it to go climbing.

Recommendations: Los Sulfatos waterfall is located 6 hours away, 10.8 km by foot from Villa Paulina towards La Paloma Glacier.
